Know about Women’s Weight Problem

* Too much sitting, too much stress, too much food Among the environmental factors that cause a woman to stack on the pounds: Lack of time, which prevents her from getting some form of physical activity daily; being the cook of the house, which means being constantly surrounded by food; an 8- to 10-hour job that keeps her tied to the desk; TV-time snacking; pub-crawling/partying as an occupational requisite; etc.

* Age starting in her 30s, a woman loses muscle gradually and her resting metabolic rate starts to slow - which is why she finds it more difficult to shake off the extra padding after this age. Pregnancies and menopause add their own damage.

* Fat genes a family history of obesity does increase her chances of becoming obese by about 25 to 30 per cent. Genes are also thought to determine such things as the number of fat cells a woman is born with, whether most of her middle-age spread will end up on her abdomen or on her hips, and her metabolic rate.

Here are a few ways by which you can help your mate win the Battle of the Bulge.

1. Catch the problem early. Gaining flab is a slow, subtle process that often goes undetected. Most women don't get too alarmed if they gain a pound or two. Before too long, however, those 2 pounds have morphed into 3, and the 3 becomes 5, 8, and then 10. Leafing through old pictures and photo albums together periodically is a subtle way to bring these changes to her notice.

3. Don't encourage mindless snacking. There are few things that can undo a woman's control more than TV. She may polish off a whole bag of Lays on auto pilot while watching Desperate Housewives.

4. Don't stock the baddies. Keeping chocolates, chips and other taboo foods around the house, even if they are for the kids, only serve to activate her taste buds. Let the children buy only what they can finish. And limit restaurant eating to once or twice a month for the whole family.

5. Shoulder some of her stress. Women are more prone to comfort eating than men. If she's turning to food every time she's anxious or annoyed, step in and take over some of her chores. Even minor tasks like cleaning up after dinner or minding the kids while she's cooking can ease her load.

6. Get her moving. Loss of muscle mass starting at 30 is an unrecognized contributor to middle-age spread. Aerobic exercise and weight training helps raise the metabolic rate and build lean muscle. Take up a joint membership at a gym and work out together. You'll both get fit, which can only do well to your health and your relationship.
